March is Heartworm Detection and Protection Month at Healing Springs Animal Hospital.

Heartworm disease is a very serious condition that may be found in dogs and cats.  The disease is spread by infected mosquitoes, and, if bitten, the pet will develop a large spaghetti-like worm in their heart.  Heartworm disease is fatal if left untreated.  Even that one mosquito that flies into the house on a warm night is enough to spread the disease, it is not just contagious to the dogs and cats that spend most of their time outdoors.

Heartworm disease is easier to prevent than to treat.  There are several different heartworm preventatives available, and we are more than happy to help you find the right fit for your pet.  Before starting any heartworm preventative, a simple blood test is required to ensure that the disease is not already present in the animal.  Periodic testing is also required every three years even when pets are on a preventative year round just to make sure the medication has been 100% effective.  Sometimes a pet may vomit or be ill enough that the medication is not well-absorbed, and could pose a risk of infection.

Since March is heartworm month, we are going to run a special offer to our clients.  We will run heartworm tests on your cat, and give a free feline leukemia and FIV test with the heartworm test purchase.  We will also run a heartworm test on your dogs, and give a free tick bourne disease panel(tests for 3 types of diseases spread by ticks) with the heartworm test purchase.  We hope you will take advantage of this offer.  Please give Healing Springs Animal Hospital a call at 276-236-5103 or use your PetPortal account to set up an appointment.  We look forward to seeing you and your pets!
