Dr. Dowell's exceptional academic background combined with her dedicated and successful veterinary career make her a valuable member of the Healing Springs team.
Stephanie earned her doctorate in 2007, but her veterinary career began long before that. From 1998 to 2005, she worked as a veterinary assistant as much as she could during summers and on holidays. She did everything from cleaning, to assisting in surgeries, to administering treatments. She also worked as an elementary school tutor and as a medical records clerk for Alleghany Memorial Hospital. Since attaining her DVM, Dr. Dowell has worked as a veterinarian in private rural practice in northwest NC, and eventually worked her way up to the lead veterinarian role at the Winston-Salem Banfield Pet Hospital. She is a member of the American Veterinary Medical Association and the North Carolina Academy of Small Animal Veterinarians. Dr. Dowell joined Healing Springs in 2015.
Dr. Dowell resides in Ennice NC. She volunteers as a rescue technician for the Alleghany County Rescue Squad. She is a member of the scuba diving and high-angle rescue teams, applying emergency medical and rescue skills in extreme situations such as vehicle extrication and search-and-rescue incidents.
Dr. Dowell is also an alumni member of Alpha Phi Omega, a national service fraternity. Her APO volunteer work includes organizing blood donation drives for the American Red Cross and serving as scout leader for Boy and Girl Scout troops at the Governor Moorehead School for the Blind.
Her favorite hobby seems to be geocaching, especially if it involves wilderness / mountain hiking. Her personal pets include Klaus the St. Bernard, Captain Jack Sparrow and Diego (cats), Bessie the rat, a parakeet, and two saltwater aquariums with fish and live corals.
Dr. Dowell's favorite aspects of veterinary medicine are general surgery, laparoscopic surgery, dentistry, exotics (pocket pets / wildlife), and diagnostic imaging.
Did you know there are three types of spays? At Healing Springs Animal Hospital, the better type costs the same as the old-fashioned spay. What's more, we are the only vet clinic in the region offering the better and best types of spays (ovariectomies and endoscopic spays). Help your pet avoid unnecessary surgical disruption, pain, and recovery time.
