Behavior problems are one of the biggest reasons dogs end up in the pound. We host these classes because a well-trained, well-socialized pet promotes the human-animal bond. Dr. Jenkins and Stephanie Burnette are both experienced dog handlers. They have competed and placed in both UKC and AKC obedience and rally competitions. They each have had therapy dogs registered with both Pet Partners and Hope Animal Assisted Crisis Response. Stephanie and Dr. Jenkins are both credentialed Team Evaluators for Pet Partners.
People interested in signing up for classes should call (276) 236-5103 or use the contact form below to send a message.
Classes run in four series: Puppy, Basic Obedience, Intermediate, and Advanced.
Puppy classes focus on socialization and proper behavior including dog-to-dog behavior and dog-to-human behavior. Puppy class will cover typical puppy problems such as chewing, jumping, housebreaking, etc. Basic commands will also be introduced with a purely positive, motivational method. Each class will end with puppy playtime. Puppies should be at least 12 weeks old to participate and must be current with their vaccinations.
Basic obedience class builds the foundation for having a well-behaved dog that you can take out and enjoy. The class will focus on five basic commands: heel, sit, down, stay, and come. Dogs will be trained to perform these commands with distractions. The class will also address problem behaviors such as jumping and leash pulling.
Dogs that are 6 months or older and that have completed the basic obedience class can move on to the intermediate class. Intermediate class will continue work on the five basic commands with increased distraction and off-leash work. Intermediate classes will work on the dogs’ attention spans and help ensure consistency in command response.
The focus of advanced classes vary according to the goals and focus of group participants at the time. Advanced classes prove very helpful for maintaining the gains you have made with your dog and having weekly fun with your dog. Advanced classes have prepared very successful competitors for UKC and AKC obedience competitions and rally. Advanced classes have also prepared participants for successful therapy dog certifications. Areas of focus have been show-level obedience, long owner-out-of-site down stays, show-level rally, agility training, and advanced positioning commands such as front, finish, swing, etc.
